Assignment evaluation changes

Dear course participant

This is to inform you about the changes in the evaluation of Basic Course in Biomedical Research cycle 5 assignment (Sep-Dec 2021). The following questions were identified to have issues in them and therefore they are not considered for scoring. For each lecture, the score obtained is calculated as a percentage based on the number of valid questions.

Details are given below:

Assignment 6: Analytical study designs

Q9: A researcher intends to determine the association between salt intake and hypertension. 100 out of the 600 hypertension patients and 40 out of 600 patients without hypertension had high salt intake. Calculate the odds ratio for the association between salt intake and hypertension.
 a) 2.2
 b) 2.5
 c) 3.3
 d) 3.8

Remark: Answer key is wrong. Correct answer was not given in the options.

Explanation:

Odds ratio = ad / bc
     = 100 * 560 / 500 * 40
     = 2.8

Hence the correct answer is 2.8

***************************************************************************

Assignment 18: Data analysis

Q10: In a cohort study to examine the association between use of Oral contraceptive pills (OCP) and development of breast cancer, 35 out of 8,000 women who used OCP and 33 out of the 22,000 women who did not use OCP had developed breast cancer over 10 years of follow-up. Calculate the measure of association.
 a) 1.3
 b) 1.5
 c) 1.8
 d) 2.0

Remark: Answer key is wrong. Correct answer is not given in the options.

Explanation:

The measure of association for the given study is risk ratio.

Risk ratio = (a/a+b) / (c/c+d)
= (35/8000)/ (33/22000)
= 770/264
= 2.9

Hence the correct answer is 2.9
