NPTEL: Latest update on Exams for Jan 2020 semester
Dear learner,
-NPTEL Team
UPDATE ABOUT NPTEL JAN-APR 2020 EXAMS
This announcement is only for those who registered for final exam.
NPTEL Committee has decided to discontinue the Online Remote Proctored Exam Option.
Hence, you now have to choose between the following 2 options.
OPTION 1: IN PERSON PROCTORED EXAM AT FIXED EXAM CENTRES
We will be conducting exams with TCS iON (like we normally do) for which you have to appear in person at the designated exam centre in the city chosen by you.
The current exam dates fixed for this are:
Important:
The above is subject to Government restrictions prevalent in various states at that point in time.
If you choose this option, the responsibility to reach the centre lies with you.
If the exams do get postponed due to unavoidable circumstances, exams may be conducted in August 2020 or maybe even as late as in October 2020.
If you choose to write the exam through this option and the exam is conducted by us in a particular city and you miss it, refund will NOT be possible as all arrangements would have been made with the vendor for the same and hence payment made to the vendor.
If you do pass the course as per the criteria mentioned, certificate will be the same as we normally give.
We will ensure you will be able to write the exams you have registered for without a clash in slots.
NPTEL, along with the exam partner, will make sure that exams are conducted by following appropriate social distancing norms and hygiene rules as required in the current situation.
We will try and ensure conduct of exam in the cities given in the list, but if in case for any unforeseen reason, we are unable to conduct the exam in the city chosen by you, we will refund 80% of the exam fee. In this case, you will not get the certificate from us.
Same final score calculation and pass criteria as mentioned in the Course introduction page will be applied and NPTEL certificates will be given as per that.
Exam fees will not be refunded if you select this option and later do not/cannot take the exam.
In the link given below, you may choose exam cities where you prefer to write exams.
------------------------------
OPTION 2: CANCEL EXAM AND TAKE A REFUND
NPTEL certificate will NOT be issued in this case and you will only get an attested assignment score sheet. We will create and share a letter stating the Assignment scores obtained in the course, by the end of June, 2020.
We will refund 80% of the exam fees you had paid, with 20% retained by NPTEL towards admin costs. Refund will be initiated only after exams are concluded (after June 25).
THOSE WHO DO NOT FILL THIS FORM
By default, your choice will be taken as: CANCEL AND REFUND
LAST DATE TO FILL THIS FORM: JUNE 7, 2020 - 5PM

will be conducting exams with TCS iON (like we normally do) for which

More details about the options:
Option 1: What is required to choose Online remote proctored exam?
We have finalized an online exam vendor with remote proctoring to conduct exams for those who have the following facilities:
- A laptop/desktop with webcam, audio and stable internet connection.
- You can write the exam from wherever you are.
- Please check system requirements shown below.

If you wish to take the remote proctored online exam online, please follow the following steps.
STEP 1:
Mock Test
You
will receive an email with Link for a Mock Test. Please go ahead and
use this link to test your system requirements and compatibility.
- The duration of this Mock test will be 10 mins.
- This Mock Test has to be completed in order to check your system’s compatibility to take the remote proctored online exam.
- Hence, completing this Mock test is Mandatory for those who wish to take the remote proctored online exam.
- Those who do not complete the Mock Test successfully will not be able to participate in the remote proctored online exam.
If you are able to successfully complete the Mock test and submit the answers to the dummy questions, you can opt for the remote proctored online exam.
Please note:

OPTION 2: IN PERSON PROCTORED EXAM AT FIXED EXAM CENTRES
We will be conducting exams with TCS iON (like we normally do) for which you have to appear in person at the designated exam centre in the city chosen by you.
The exam dates will be 23,24,25 June 2020 for this.
- We will ensure you will be able to write the exams you have registered for without a clash in slots.
- We, along with the exam partner, will make sure that exams will be conducted by following appropriate social distancing norms and hygiene rules as required in the current situation.
- It will be your responsibility to ensure that you reach the centre to give the exam.
- We will try and ensure conduct of exam in the cities given in the list, but if in case for any unforeseen reason, we are unable to conduct the exam in the city chosen by you, we will refund 80% of the exam fee and you will not get the certificate from us.
******************************
OPTION 3: CANCEL EXAM AND TAKE A REFUND
You can choose to cancel your exam and take a refund. We will refund 80% of the fee you have paid, retaining 20% towards administrative costs. An attested assignment score sheet will be issued to you in this case.
Link: bit.ly/
In this case, you will NOT get an NPTEL certificate for the course.
******************************
IMPORTANT:
- Those of you graduating this year and who definitely need an NPTEL certificate - we suggest that you should make a serious effort in attempting this online remote proctored exam. As you know, the in-person-at-centre exam has a lot more dependencies on external factors. So please try to arrange for the systems per the requirements and attempt this online exam.
- The above 3 options can be exercised for each of the courses registered for individually.
- If you pass the course as per the certification criteria, the certificate will be the same as we normally give.
- You can choose either the online exam session or the in-person session to write the exam. If you miss that we will be unable to provide another opportunity to take up the exam this semester. The fees paid will be used towards this one session.
- Fees will not be refunded if you participate in this exam and then could not complete the exam for any reason whatsoever.

[Updates] Helpful Resources for teachers to move online
Dear Learners,
Greetings from the LCM Team!!!
As you are aware, the CoVID19 pandemic has resulted in widespread disruption across educational institutions. Educational Technology Department at IIT Bombay, the parent department of the LCM instructors, is no exception.
Since leaving the campus last week, Educational Technology (ET) students, post-docs and alumni collaborated online, to create a set of resources for instructors moving to online teaching. You can access these resources at Online-Teaching Resources for Teachers. We hope you find these resources useful. It is ongoing work, with more resources are being added, UI being polished, content being edited, etc. Do take a look.
Some interesting facts about this effort:
- 17 PhD students, 2 post-docs, 6 MTech students, and 9 PhD alumni collaborated in this effort
- The alumni are from various parts of India and the World (Representations from US, Japan,..)
- It took them 6 days, despite their home constraints, create this
- The project was led by Lucian Ngeze from Tanzania, who is still on campus and is also part of our LCM Course Team
- Some of the key technology applications used by the team for collaboration are - Google Drive, WhatsApp, Slack and Zoom. (Do check the resources to understand how some of these technologies can be used for such collaborative activities)
Please leave your feedback as a post-it on this wall.
Thank you,

Welcome to Week 4 || Designing Learner-Centred MOOCs || Creating LxIs and Effective Orchestration of MOOCs
Dear Learner,
In Week 3, you learned about creating LbDs and LxTs, and looked at some tools and recommendations for online assessment. Some good responses were observed on the discussion threads regarding the utility of LxTs, which were also discussed during the live interaction with Dr. Jayakrishnan M. Additionally, there were several other useful discussions during this live interaction regarding creation of MOOCs and MOOC platforms, tools for creating LeDs for domains such as language and programming, and many in the area of related course activities. In case you have missed being a part of this interaction, you can still find it here: https://youtu.be/qSAXgOuewRs and it will be shared on the course platform as well.

Designing Learner-Centric MOOCs || Updates || Clarification on queries related to KQ and AQ in week 2
Dear Learners,
This is an update regarding two graded questions in Week 2 for which learners have raised queries in the Discussion Forum.
1. Q1 - KQ2: In this question, the Practice Activity 2.6 was not visible earlier. This has been enabled now and you can attempt the question.
2. Q2 - AQ2.3: There is an error in this question as this was supposed to be a Multiple Selection Question (More than one answer correct). Hence we are ignoring this question in the grading process (i.e. 0 points).
Apologies for these two errors in the graded questions and we will ensure that future graded activities are error free.

Welcome to Week 3 || Designing Learner-Centred MOOCs || Creating LbDs and LxTs
Designing Learner-Centric MOOCs - Week 3: Creating LbDs ad LxTs
Dear Learner,
Welcome to Week 3 of the course "Designing Learner-centric MOOCs".
In Week 2 you learned about creating LeDs and some video creation tools to increase interactivity. A good number of learners participated in the discussion forum (LxI - Week 2) and discussed more on LeDs and how to create them. Many of you put up different questions that triggered discussions and clarification.
Clarifications on Errors in the Questions/Options of Week 2:
Learners have pointed out two confusions regarding Practice Questions and a Graded Assimilation Quiz in the forum. We have looked at these and found configuration issues from our end. We apologize for these errors and will be rectifying them. A more detailed explanation will be posted under the respective questions by today evening.
About Week 3: In Week 3, you will be introduced to the concept of Learning by Doing (LbD) activities. These are practice activities that allow you to micropractice what you have learned from the LeD. Towards the end of the week, you will also learn about Learning Extension Trajectories (LxTs) as external resources that are provided to learners to widen their scope of understanding. Generally, in Week 3:
You will be exploring more on the learning by doing (LbD), and the process of creating effective LbDs.
You will learn how to give customised and constructive feedback to LbDs;
You will learn about LxTs and how to create LxTs.
3rd Live Interaction: We will have our third Live interaction this Thursday, February 13, 2020. It will be taken up by Dr. Jayakrishnan M. Details of the Live interaction session are as follows:
YouTube Link for Live Interaction: http://bit.ly/LCM2020_LI3

Welcome to Week 2|| Designing Learner-Centric MOOCs|| Creating LeDs
Dear Learner,
Welcome to Week 2 of the course "Designing Learner-centric MOOCs". In the past week we had given you an overview of the LCM model. We thank many learners who came forward in the discussion forum and expressed their experience of learner-centricity in MOOCs (not just in this course). Do continue your participation in this week as we have yet another focus question for you this week.
In Week 1, we learned as to what is a learner-centric MOOC, and why is it required. There were some good discussion threads created in multiple forum categories (LxI - Week1, MOOC Analogy, and Content Queries). A good practice that we see emerging in the course is learners helping out their peers in the discussion forum. We would request you to continue these discussion threads even in this week and also participate in the second learner experience interaction opened up this week.
As instructor Dr. Gargi Banerjee reiterated during the 1st live interaction, peer learning is one of the biggest strengths of a MOOC and we hope our course format helps you in leveraging it further. She touched upon instructional designing and the chunking of content necessary in MOOCs, detailing of which you will see this week in the course.
In Week 2:
You will be exploring more on the learning dialog (LeD), and the process of creating LeDs.
You will find videos on FAQs on Reflection spots that answer commonly reported doubts raised by learners during the previous runs of this course.
You will find LxT resources including resources on tools to create interactive videos as few of you enquired, during our first live session.
As for graded quizzes, there will be a slight change from Week 2. We will have only Assimilation Quizzes (AQs) and Knowledge Quiz (KQ). The due date for these quizzes is on or before Wednesday, 12 February 2019, 11:59 PM IST. The Reflection Quiz (RQ) will be released on Friday, February 7, 2020.
To access the content, please use the URL: https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc20_ge12/unit?unit=25&lesson=26
We encourage you to continue participating in the Discussion Forum, share your experiences, ask questions, comment/reply to posts made by others to learn from other course participants. This will enrich your learning experience.
Hope you have a great Week 2 learning!
Thank you,
LCM Team
Designing Learner-Centric MOOCs || Week 1 || Have you met the Discussion forum moderators?
Dear Learners,
Hope you have started going through the contents of the course. Along with the learner-centric approach attempted in this course, another speciality of this course is the explicit effort that we put in attempting to create a learning community.
Our course alumni are helping us in a great way for achieving this. We are happy to let you know that a few of them have already joined this course as Discussion forum moderators. You can check the discussion forum posts to see who these alumni are and read their learning experiences while they were taking this course as a learner previous semester. Also, they will be the first set of people who will respond to your queries and discussion posts.
To access the discussion forum, please click on the tab "Ask a Question" or use the URL: https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc20_ge12/forum. While you are checking the discussion forum posts please do not forget to subscribe to the forum (if you have not already done so).
Hope you have a great time interacting with the alumni over the duration of the course!
Thanks you,
