[Updates] Helpful Resources for teachers to move online

Dear Learners,

Greetings from the LCM Team!!!

As you are aware, the CoVID19 pandemic has resulted in widespread disruption across educational institutions. Educational Technology Department at IIT Bombay, the parent department of the LCM instructors, is no exception.

Since leaving the campus last week, Educational Technology (ET) students, post-docs and alumni collaborated online, to create a set of resources for instructors moving to online teaching. You can access these resources at Online-Teaching Resources for Teachers. We hope you find these resources useful. It is ongoing work, with more resources are being added, UI being polished, content being edited, etc. Do take a look.

Some interesting facts about this effort:

  • 17 PhD students, 2 post-docs, 6 MTech students, and 9 PhD alumni collaborated in this effort
  • The alumni are from various parts of India and the World (Representations from US, Japan,..)
  • It took them 6 days, despite their home constraints, create this
  • The project was led by Lucian Ngeze from Tanzania, who is still on campus
  • Some of the key technology applications used by the team for collaboration are - Google Drive, WhatsApp, Slack and Zoom. (Do check the resources to understand how some of these technologies can be used for such collaborative activities)

Please leave your feedback as a post-it on this wall.

Thank you,
LCM Team

Designing Learner-Centric MOOCs: Behind the Scenes

Dear Learners,

Greetings from LCM Team!!!

In the final week of our interaction, many learners had requested us to share the 'Behind the Scenes' videos from our LCM course. Our studio team has now created a small video of how we create a Learning Dialogue. The video are from another LCM course that we offered as part of teacher training courses in the IITBombayX platform. We are also sharing the broad plan that we prepared for the LCM course during its design so that you will understand the aspect of course planning.

We hope this will provide you an idea about post-production work involved in creation of the videos in such a course.

Thank you,
LCM Team

Designing Learner-Centric MOOCs: Week 4 - Creating LxIs and Effective Orchestrating of MOOCs

Dear Learners,

In Week 3, you learned about creating LbDs and LxTs, and looked at some tools and recommendations for online assessment. Some good responses were observed on the discussion threads regarding the utility of LxTs, which were also discussed during the live interaction with Prof. Sridhar Iyer. Additionally, there were several other useful discussions during this live interaction on structuring and planning of your own MOOCs, appropriate mapping of credits to the number of MOOC hours, incorporation of LCM elements in content from varied fields, etc. In case, you have missed being a part of this interaction, you can still find it on the course portal.

In our last week of the course, we will be focusing on creation of LxIs, and finally orchestration of a MOOC. We offer varied LxTs on research and practice around discussion forums and introduced other discussion forum applications that you may consider for your own MOOC.

As this is the last week of the course, we have also posted the end of course survey form. We would request you to kindly fill in the form to successfully complete all course activities.

The assignment pattern for this week is similar to previous weeks, i.e., a knowledge quiz (KQ), a reflection quiz (RQ) and three assimilation quizzes (AQ). Though AQs and KQ have been released with the content, RQ for this week will be released on 22 August as it is based your discussion in the discussion forum. Accordingly, the due date for the AQs and KQ is on or before Wednesday (28 August 2019, 11:59 PM IST), while RQ is due on or before Wednesday (4 September 2019, 11:59 PM IST).

To access the content, please use the URL:
https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc19_ge19/unit?unit=64&lesson=65

Also, we had released a Google form seeking your inputs on scheduling of Live Interaction and extension of due dates. Till now only 15 have responded and we will need more learners to take part before taking a decision. Kindly respond to this form at the earliest.

Hope you have a great Week 4 learning!

Thank you

Designing Learner-Centric MOOCs: Week 3 - How to Create LbDs and LxTs?

Dear Learners,

In Week 2, we learnt about creating LeDs, and some recommendations for creation of effective LeDs. There were some good responses in discussion threads this week (LxI – Week 2) mentioning the role of reflection spots in engaging learners, assimilation of content, and performing interactions than merely watching the videos. We would request you to continue these discussion threads even in this week, and discuss more on benefits shared by your peers.

We also provided an LeD constructor to help you create your own LeD scripts on a topic along with a self-check rubric. We hope that you are in a better position now to do this for your own MOOC. Let us know, in case you have any queries regarding the same.

There were interesting questions during the live interactions with Prof. Sahana Murthy (e.g. ensuring effective implementation of reflection spots in an online environment, incorporation of in-class exercises in MOOCs etc.). The interaction was joined in by Dr. Mrinal Patwardhan, who shared some of key ideas that Instructors have to keep in mind while creating content. In case, you have missed being a part of this interaction, you can still find it on the course portal.

In Week 3, we will be exploring more on creation of learning by doing (LbD) activities, and learner extension trajectories (LxTs). This week, we offer LxTs describing formative assessment strategies, technology tools for formative assessment, and revised Bloom’s taxonomy for effective creation of assessment questions at different cognitive levels.

The assignment pattern for this week is similar to the previous week, i.e., a knowledge quiz (KQ), a reflection quiz (RQ) and three assimilation quizzes (AQ). The due date for the Assignment submission is on or before Wednesday (21 August 2019, 11:59 PM IST). To access the content, please use the URL:
https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc19_ge19/unit?unit=46&lesson=47

As this is learner-centric course, we highly encourage you to contribute to the forum by answering some of the questions/comments/views that your peers have posted. We have seven of our previous course participants joining us in the discussion forum and answering your queries. These are - Prof. Adya Sharma, Prof. Vijay Prakash Misra, Prof. E Samundeeshwari, Prof. Ilavenil K, Prof. Jeyaprakash, Prof. Abhishek, Prof. Sonica Rautela, Prof. Usha. We hope that this will significantly enhance your learning experience in this course.

Hope you have a great Week 3 learning!

Thanks you,

Designing Learner-Centric MOOCs - Week 2: Creating LeDs

Dear Learners,

Welcome to Week 2 of the course "Designing Learner-centric MOOCs". In the past week we had given you an overview of the LCM model. We thank many learners who came forward in the discussion forum and expressed their experience of learner-centricity in MOOCs (not just in this course). Do continue your participation in this week as we have yet another focus question for you this week. A good practice that we see emerging in the course is learners helping out their peers in the discussion forum. We would request you to continue these discussion threads even in this week and also participate in the second learner experience interaction opened up this week.

As Dr. Sameer S. Sahasrabudhe reiterated during the live interaction, peer learning is one of the biggest strengths of a MOOC and we hope our course format helps you in leveraging it further.

In Week 2, we will be exploring more on the learning dialog (LeD), and the process of creating LeDs. You are also provided with LxT resources on creating interactive videos as few of you enquired, during our first live session, on the creation of such MOOC videos. Please note, these are given as Learning Extension Trajectories as the focus of this course is mainly on the idea of bringing learner-centricity in MOOC setting.

The assignment pattern for this week is similar to the last week, i.e., a knowledge quiz (KQ), a reflection quiz (RQ) and three assimilation quizzes (AQ). The due date for the Assignment submission is on or before Wednesday (14 August 2019, 11:59 PM IST).

To access the content, please use the URL: https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc19_ge19/unit?unit=30&lesson=31

Hope you have a great Week 2 learning!
