ABOUT THE COURSE:

The course will introduce the core concepts of predictive modelling and its applications to data analysis. It will cover both supervised and unsupervised learning. In addition to the modelling techniques, the course will include model evaluation and model diagnostics as well. The course pedagogy will involve concepts, methods and applications using real-life examples and illustrations using R. Furthermore, the course will also focus on interpretation of results. The objective of the course is to equip participants with the concepts and methods of modelling techniques which will consequently lead to improved decision making.

Instructor bio

Prof. Sayantee Jana

IIT Hyderabad
Dr. Sayantee Jana is a Statistics Faculty at IIT Hyderabad with a diverse experience of teaching doctors, engineers, lawyers, government officers, corporate executives, MBA and undergraduate students across 3 different countries. She has worked on a few different fields of statistics and Machine Learning and collaborates with industry and academia abroad, and regularly visits Universities such as University of Toronto, University of Ottawa and University of Cambridge. Her research areas include but is not limited to ML Models and Data mining for big data from finance and healthcare industry, spatio-temporal modelling and maps, modelling of skewed and volatile data for financial data, and adaptive designs (skewed randomization) for clinical trials in the pharmaceutical industry. She did her PhD in Mathematical Statistics from McMaster University and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto working on data mining for big data. She has supervised more than 20 UG & PG students in both academic and industry projects, and around 10 engineering professionals from industry in AI/ML projects.

She has received the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Scholarship and Fields Research Fellowship to visit the University of Toronto. She was also the IBS Young Ambassador to the World Statistics Congress in 2019 and the Florence Nightingale Award Winner in 2020. She has served on the Social Program Committee and Awards Committee for the International Biometrics Conference 2022 & 2024. She serves as the Chair of the Country-Representatives Committee for the Caucus for Women in Statistics and its Governing Council member. She has been on panels and organizing committees of international conferences and is an Associate Editor of Statistica Neerlandica, a peer-reviewed journal by the Netherlands Society for Statistics and Operations Research.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: April 19, 2026 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 6 assignments out of the total 8 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

Please note that assignments encompass all types (including quizzes, programming tasks, and essay submissions) available in the specific week.

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Hyderabad. It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
