ABOUT THE COURSE:

Learning about the Project Finance and Management is an important requirement for the budding professionals, entrepreneurs and managers in the industry. Project finance is an integral part of overall project management and requires deeper understanding of financial planning and control of new projects/ventures. Any start-up in itself is a new project and managing new venture requires a compete knowledge of different facets of project finance and management. To become a successful entrepreneur, one must know how to give shape to their ideas and convert them into successful ventures. For the existing firms, taking up new proposals for expansion, diversification and growth happens to be a challenging task and every new proposal is a new project itself. Thus, relevant sources/techniques of project finance and management help both entrepreneurs and managers to manage their ventures efficiently and effectively right from planning to review stage.

Week 1:  Introduction to project management, project management for start-ups and existing firms, capital investment-importance & difficulties, types of capital investment, phases of capital budgeting, level of decision making, facets of project analysis, major investments-key issues, objectives of project management, common errors in project management.

Week 2: Generation & screening of project ideas, corporate appraisal, scouting for project ideas, Preliminary screening, project rating index, Project management and entrepreneurship.

Week 3: Market and demand analysis for new projects,Situational analysis, data collection, demand forecasting, market plan

Week 4: Project technical analysis, financial estimates and projections, cost of project, means of financing, Cost of production, working capital requirement & financing,profitability projections.

Week 5: Generation of Projected financial statements for new projects, cash flow projections, multi-year projections,

Week 6: Project evaluation/Investment criteria, Discounted criteria. Non-discounted criteria, Project cash flow analysis.

Week 7: Measurement of Cost of capital for new ventures, cost of debt, Cost of equity, WACC, Floatation cost and CoC.

Week 8: Project risk analysis, Sensitivity & scenario analysis, Break even analysis, Models of risk analysis.

Week 9: Financing of projects, Sources of financing projects, Debt and equity financing, Other sources, Working capital finance.

Week 10: Networking techniques, CPM, PERT, Network cost system.

Week 11: Forms of project organizations, Project planning and control, Human aspects of project management, Essence of project management, Analysis of project risk.

Week 12: Review of projects, Control of in-progress projects, The Post audit, Abandonment analysis, Administrative aspects of projects, Evaluating the new projects system of an organization.

Instructor bio

Prof. Anil Kumar Sharma

IIT Roorkee
Dr. Anil K. Sharma, a Professor in the area of Finance and Accounting in the Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee is M. Com and M. Phil, First Class First and Gold Medalist and Ph.D. in Financial Management from Panjab University Chandigarh. He is working at IIT Roorkee for the past more than 23 years and has more than 30 years of teaching and research experience in total. He has published more than 180 research papers in International and National refereed journals and refereed conference. He and his research team have been awarded best paper awards for many times in international conferences held at different institutions/countries. He is the chief editor of one International Journal and editorial board member for five International and national Journals and reviewer to more than twenty International and national Journals. Since 2017, he has completed 04 highly successful courses on NPTEL.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: November 02, 2025 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 8 assignments out of the total 12 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

Please note that assignments encompass all types (including quizzes, programming tasks, and essay submissions) available in the specific week.

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Roorkee .It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
