ABOUT THE COURSE:

Production and operations management (POM) involves planning, controlling, and coordinating the resources required to manufacture and deliver goods and services efficiently. This involves transforming inputs (such as labour, raw materials, and technology) into outputs (finished products or services) with optimal use of resources.

The course is designed to equip students, academics, and professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to manage the systems, resources, and processes involved in this endeavour.
The course covers the entire operations spectrum such as competitiveness, strategy and productivity, product design, forecasting – time series, capacity planning, process selection and facility layout, and facility location planning.

It further deals with quality management, quality control, aggregate planning, master scheduling, MRP, and inventory management. It also discusses JIT and lean operations, scheduling, project management including network and critical path analysis, and management of waiting lines. It covers both theory and application.

The course focuses on efficient operations that optimise costs, reduce waste, and improve quality to gain a sustainable competitive advantage.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: Management students (PGDM, MBA, BBA), BE, ME students in Mechanical/Industrial/Production Engineering. Academics, Practicing professionals, and managers at various levels.

PREREQUISITES: Must be an undergraduate student and have completed 10 + 2 Board Exams.

Instructor bio

Prof. Sanjib Chowdhury

IIT Kharagpur
Sanjib Chowdhury is a Visiting Professor (full-time) at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, specializing in Strategic Management, and Operations Management. He brings an impressive 41 years of professional experience, including 34 years in the oil and gas industry and 7 years in academia. His industry experience includes two major oil companies in India and Kuwait in the areas of Strategic and Corporate Planning, Business Performance Improvement, Operations and Process Optimization, Project Management, and HR.

He is the recipient of "Kuwait Gulf Oil Company's Ideal Employee Award", "ONGC Chairman’s Award", "ONGC Director’s Award" to mention a few, and has held several responsible positions exhibiting his leadership and technical expertise. 

Based on his work experience, he has solely authored a book titled "Optimization and Business Improvement Studies in Upstream Oil and Gas Industry", published by John Wiley & Sons Inc., NJ, USA which reflects his deep understanding and knowledge of the industry and is a valuable resource for professionals and academia. 

Dr. Chowdhury received B.Tech. (Hons.), M.Tech., and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Management all from IIT Kharagpur. He has also published several technical papers in esteemed journals, further contributing to his field.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: November 01, 2025 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 8 assignments out of the total 12 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

Please note that assignments encompass all types (including quizzes, programming tasks, and essay submissions) available in the specific week.

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Kharagpur .It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
