ABOUT THE COURSE : Employment Communication: A Lab based course is intended as Finishing School for Undergraduate students of Colleges / Professional Institutes who are soon to join the workforce. It is possible that some of these students might have completed Courses or trained on Professional Communication / Soft / Communication Skills, the fact is that there is still a genuine need for intensive practice so as to put up a stellar performance during the three stage process of Employment Communication.In the first stage (CV writing) students will be trained to write impressive CVs aimed to grasp the attention of organizations / employers they would like to work with. In the 2nd phase, students will be taught the basics strategies of cracking Group Discussions (GDs) to demonstrate their Team working abilities; and also that they can emerge as leaders while still maintaining the Group /Project goals of the organizations. In the third and final stage, post a short & lucid theoretical lecture on how to tackle Interview Questions, students will undergo practical Personal Interview Sessions so as to get a feel of the real scenario and reduce the fear factor.In conclusion, the objective of the proposed course (on Employment Communication: A Lab based course) is to prepare students to effectively train & confidently prepare to enter the workplace.

INTENDED AUDIENCE : All Final year UG level students of the Engineering, Humanities, Science, Commerce, Management disciplines preparing for Employment to join the workplace

PREREQUISITES : Must be enrolled in the UG Course & preferably in the Final year of their Course of study

INDUSTRY SUPPORT : Most Private and Government Companies (including Maha-Ratna, Mini-Ratna & Nava-Ratna), Private concerns , and companies in PPP mode

Prof. Seema Singh

IIT Kharagpur
Dr. Seema Singh is currently Associate Professor of English and Soft Skills Trainer in the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. The highlights of her academic career include a Gold Medal at the BA (English Honours) from the University of Burdwan and University Fifth rank at the MA (Jadavpur University). This was rounded up with a Gold Medal at the M.Phil. (English) and a Ph.D. in Contemporary African American Fiction from the Banaras Hindu University (Varanasi).
Dr. Singh began her teaching career in 1996 with a seven-year Foreign Service stint at the Royal University of Bhutan. Prior to joining the IIT Kharagpur in December 2003, she had been Visiting Faculty for a semester at the Lucknow Regional Center of the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad. In her long teaching career, she has published several scholarly articles in International Refereed Journals as well as in National (Indian) Refereed Journals. Apart from a couple of book chapters, she has two books to her credit as sole author. Two more books are in the offing. Her NPTEL-MOOC course on Employment Communication is quite popular and indexed in the website of IIT Kharagpur. She has to her credit a GIAN course on Positive effects of Meditation on Young people and Adults as well as a SGRIP course on Time Management.
Currently, Dr. Singh teaches Courses (under the broad domains of Communication Skills and English Literature) at the IIT Kharagpur. Among other areas of her research interest are Business / Managerial Communication, Technical Communication /Writing Skills, Contemporary Indian Women’s Fiction in English, Feminist Narratology, and Subaltern Literature As a Soft Skills communication trainer, she has successfully conducted several MDPs & FDPs. With a number of quality publications in reputed International and National level refereed Journals, Dr. Singh aspires to excellence in Academics and Research.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: March 23, 2025 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 6 assignments out of the total 8 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

Please note that assignments encompass all types (including quizzes, programming tasks, and essay submissions) available in the specific week.

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Kharagpur .It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
