Week 1:  Introduction to Organizational Behavior: Definition, Functions and roles of a manager-interpersonal, informational, and decisional roles; Management skills- technical, human, and conceptual skills; Applications- workplace diversity, employee well-being at work, positive work environment, ethical behavior

Week 2: Diversity in Organizations: Factors determining diversity in organizations- demographic characteristics, discrimination, biographical characteristics, ability-intellectual and physical abilities; Levels of diversity-surface-level and deep-level diversity; Implementing diversity and management strategies- selecting, developing, and retaining diverse employees in groups, expatriate adjustment, and effective diversity programs

Week 3: Personality: Meaning and determinants of personality-role of heredity and environment; Personality framework-The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(MBTI), The Big Five Personality Model, the Dark Triad(Machiavellianism, Narcissism, and Psychopathy); Attributes of personality- Core Self-Evaluations, Self-monitoring, Proactive Personality; Personality and situations-Situation Strength Theory and Trait activation Theory; Shaping behavior through learning-Classical and Instrumental Conditioning, Reinforcement and schedules of reinforcement, Behavior Modification

Week 4: Emotions and Moods: Meaning, definition and the basic emotions-affect, emotions and moods, types and sources of emotions and moods- moral emotions, positive and negative affect, positive offset; Emotional labour- felt and displayed emotions, surface and deep acting; Emotional dissonance and Emotional intelligence; Affective events theory of emotion; Emotional regulation and techniques-emotional suppression, cognitive reappraisal, social sharing or venting, mindfulness, stress resiliency; Application of emotions in organizations-selection process, decision-making, creativity, motivation, leadership, negotiation, customer service, work-life satisfaction, deviant workplace behaviors

Week 5: Motivation: Definition-need, drives and motive; Contemporary theories of motivation- self determination theory(SDT), goal–setting theory; self-efficacy theory; Application- job characteristics model(JCM),job-redesign and alternative work arrangements-flextime, job sharing, telecommuting, employee involvement, reward pay system; flexible benefits and employee recognition programs

Week 6: Group Leadership: Conceptualizing leadership; Leadership styles- autocratic, democratic and laissez-faire style; Contemporary theories of leadership- leader-member exchange, charismaticlLeadership,transactional and transformational leadership;responsible leadership- servant leadership style and Mmntoring; Evolving perspectives on Indian leadership- the Pioneering-Innovative Style and the Nurturant Task model of leadership

Week 7: Group Behavior: Defining and Classifying groups- primary and secondary groups, in-group and out-groups, task and command groups, formal and informal groups;Theories explaining why people join groups- propinquity, exchange, balance, and homan’s theory; Stages of group development and supporting theories- Tubb’s System Model and the Punctuated-Equilibrium Model; Group Properties-norms, status, cohesiveness and diversity; groupthink, groupshift, social loafing and facilitation; Group Decision-making Techniques brainstorming and nominal group technique(NGT)

Week 8: Communication: Process and functions; Formal and Informal communication, Patterns of communication-verbal(phonetics and semantics) and non-verbal(paralanguage, kinesthetics, proxemics, chronemics, haptics); Communication network- wheel, circular, Y-network and All-channel network; Directions of communication- downward, upward and lateral communication; Rumors and its types- pipe dreams, bogie rumors, wedge drivers, home stretchers; Barriers to effective communication- Semantic barrier, selective perception, information overload; grapevine; Sociometry

Week 9: Conflicting Behavior: Meaning, Stages-latent, felt, manifest and conflict aftermath; Sources of conflict-functional, dysfunctional and personal conflict; Loci of conflict, intergroup and intragroup conflict;Conflict resolution strategies, collaborating, avoiding, accommodating, compromising, alternative dispute resolutions(arbitration, mediation, negotiation); Impression Management- Phenomena of Impression Management-primacy, recency, additive effect; Tactics of impression management- ingratiation, intimidation, self handicapping, flattery, slime effect, self-enhancements

Week 10: Organizational Justice, Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR): Meaning and theoretical assumption to organizational justice-equity theory; Forms of organizational justice-distributive, procedural, and interactional justice; Antecedents and outcomes of perception of justice; Ethical behavior in organizations- difference between morals and ethics; Basic elements of ethics-ethical code, ethics training, availability of ethical situational advice and confidential reporting systems; Approaches to global ethics ethics- ethical relativism and ethical imperialism; Factors promoting ethical behavior-code of ethics, ethics training, ethics audit; Corporate Social Responsibility-meaning and its types- philanthropic, ethical, legal, and financial responsibilities; Contemporary notion to CSR-the tripple bottom line; Forms of socially responsible behavior-philanthropic,ethical,legal,and financial responsibilities; the virtuous circle- environmental sustainability, human capital enhancement, community involvement, ethical marketing

Week 11: Organizational Change and Development: Focus on change- role of technology, economic shocks, intense competition, social trends, and world politics; Planned change and change agents; Overcoming resistance to change- communication, participation, building support and commitment, developing positive relationships, implementing changes fairly, manipulation and cooptation; Approaches to managing change-Lewin’s three-step model of change process, Kotter’s Eight-step Plan and Action Research; Organizational development-meaning and techniques-sensitivity training, survey feedback, process consultation, team building, intergroup development, appreciative inquiry, creating learning organization and wellness programs; Transactional Analysis(TA)-Ego states -the Parent-Adult-Child model of TA, Elements of TA-Transactions-complimentary, crossed and ulterior transaction, Strokes, Life scripts

Week 12: Positive Organizational Scholarship(POS): Definition, Principles of POS, Scope of POS- Organizational Resilience-Stress Resilience, Work engagement and Empowerment; Psychological Capital(PSYCAP), Meaning in work; Virtuousness at work- Amplifying and buffering attributes of virtuousness, Character, Strengths and Virtues(CSV)(wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence); Spirituality at workplace; Appreciative Inquiry; Mindfulness at work; Well-being at work-Hedonic and Eudaimonic well-being; Subjective well-being; the PERMA model of well-being-Positivity, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Achievement, and Vitality

Prof. Pooja Garg

IIT Roorkee
Prof.Pooja Garg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India. She is a postgraduate in Psychology and received her Ph. D in Psychology from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India. Her areas of specialization are Organizational Behaviour and Positive Psychology. She has more than twelve years of teaching and research experience. She received the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies Fellowship, now Chey Institute of Advanced Studies (CIAS) (2018-19), South Korea. She was awarded the Emerald Highly Commended Award, 2018, and Emerald Outstanding Paper Award at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2007, UK. She has published research papers in journals of national and international repute such as The International Journal of Human Resource Development, International Journal of Educational Management, Journal of Organizational Change Management, Asia-Pacific Journal of Business Administration, Journal of Management Development, Journal of Organizational Management, among others

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams : October 26, 2025 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 8 assignments out of the total 12 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

Please note that assignments encompass all types (including quizzes, programming tasks, and essay submissions) available in the specific week.

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Roorkee. It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
