ABOUT THE COURSE:

The virtual reality (VR) industry is growing rapidly with applications in several domains. VR applications are revolutionizing how human-beings interact with computers and a number of companies in the human-computer interaction area are at the forefront of this technology with VR products. Although VR application development in industry is gaining popularity, finding human resources with VR skills is a challenge. The course addresses this challenge by training interested students in mobile VR application development that involves AI in VR. The primary objectives of this course include the following: To give students hands-on exposure to mobile virtual reality; to give students experience with basic AI in virtual reality; and to provide students with fundamentals of application design in virtual reality. The course will use tools such as Unity 3D to provide hands-on experience to the students and the students will gain exposure to such tools.

Week 1:  History of VR, Introduction to Unity, Programming in C# and User Interaction, and Prefabs in Unity 3D and adding Menus.

Week 2: ML agents in Unity 3D, and Imitation Learning.

Week 3: AI Jumping cars and Volleyball play using ML Agents, VR in Unity 3D, and Whack-a-mole Game and Blender.

Week 4: Bowling VR Game, Cups and Ball VR Game, and Hurdles Game.

Instructor bio

Prof. Varun Dutt

IIT Mandi
Prof. Varun Dutt has worked as a full professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi), India, since 2012). Prior to his joining IIT Mandi, Prof. Dutt earned his Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University, USA, in 2011. Prof. Dutt pursued his postdoctoral work at the Dynamic Decision Lab, Carnegie Mellon University, USA, in the area of behavioral cyber security from 2011-2012. Prof. Dutt has applied his knowledge and skills in the fields of psychology, public policy, and computer science to explore how humans make decisions on social, cyber-security, and environmental issues. He serves as a senior member of IEEE and as an Associate Editor in several reputed journals like Frontiers in Psychology, Frontiers in Neuroscience, etc. In the recent past, Prof. Dutt served as a special topics editor in Frontiers in Psychology (Cognitive Science) journal for a special issue on “Application of Cognitive Approaches to Cyber Security.” He has authored more than 305 papers and has received more than 5817 citations around the world.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: October 26, 2025 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 3 assignments out of the total 4 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

Please note that assignments encompass all types (including quizzes, programming tasks, and essay submissions) available in the specific week.

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Mandi .It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
