Blast and Impact Resistant Structures

By Prof.Hrishikesh Sharma   |   Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati
Learners enrolled: 94
ABOUT THE COURSE:

The course "Blast and Impact Resistant Structures" offers an in-depth exploration of the behavior of structures subjected to extreme events such as blasts and impacts. Students will gain an understanding of key concepts such as quasi-static approximations, stress waves, and energy-absorbing systems. The course covers the dynamic response of structural elements under blast loading, with a focus on single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) and multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) analysis methods. Additionally, students will learn about pressure-impulse diagrams, dynamic buckling, and failure mechanisms, equipping them with the skills to design structures capable of withstanding severe dynamic loads.

Instructor bio

Prof.Hrishikesh Sharma

Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati
Dr. H. Sharma is an accomplished academic and researcher in the field of Civil Engineering, with a specialized focus on impact mechanics, blast-resistant design, risk assessment, and performance-based engineering. Currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati since December 2011, Dr. Sharma's contributions have significantly impacted the domain of structural engineering, particularly in the context of designing structures capable of withstanding severe dynamic loading, such as blasts and impacts.

Academic Journey and Early Career:

Dr. Sharma’s academic journey is deeply rooted in his passion for structural integrity and protective design. He earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 2012 from the prestigious Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA. His doctoral work focused on advancing the understanding of how structures, particularly reinforced concrete (RC) elements, respond under severe loading conditions. The research he conducted under the supervision of prominent scholars in the field of structural dynamics laid the foundation for his later work in impact and contact mechanics. Prior to his doctoral studies, Dr. Sharma completed his Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University in 2007. His Master’s thesis contributed to the development of protective systems aimed at mitigating the damage caused by vehicular impacts on bridge structures. The knowledge and experience gained during his time at Texas A&M allowed Dr. Sharma to dive deeply into the design of protective systems for infrastructure, especially in high-risk areas prone to accidents or deliberate attacks.
