ABOUT THE COURSE:

This course emphasizes the basic understanding of the bioprocess engineering. It starts with the fundamentals of the bioprocess engineering, its importance and role in the industrial biotechnology. It also covers the introductory part of the bioreactor, types, modes of operation and the various products of economic importance. The course discusses the microbial and enzyme kinetics. It highlights the importance of metabolic stoichiometry in media formulation. It also includes the mass transfer principles, downstream processing techniques and thus it will be helpful for the students and scholars of interdisciplinary domains. The course content was prepared in such a way that it will be applicable for UG, PG students and PhD scholars.

Instructor bio

Prof. Lalit M. Pandey

IIT Guwahati
Prof. Lalit M. Pandey is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, IIT Guwahati. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He was awarded an Erasmus Mundus India4EU fellowship to pursue research at the Laboratoire des Matériaux et du Génie Physique (LMGP), Grenoble-INP, France from 2010 to 2012. Before joining the IIT Guwahati, he worked as a Scientist with the Central Pollution Control Board, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India from 2009 to 2014, and researched on water and air pollution in agro-based industries. He has received several awards, including the BRSI Malaviya Memorial Award (Young Faculty) 2020, Shastri Covid-19 Pandemic Response Grant (SCPRG) 2020, the DST-UKIERI Award (2018), the IEI (The Institution of Engineers [India]) Young Engineers Award (2017), Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) Faculty Award (2014) and an Early Career Research Award from the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India. His main research interests include biochemical and biointerface engineering. He has published over one hundred twenty six articles in peer-reviewed international journals, more than thirty four book chapters and serves on the editorial board of five international journals. He is serving as Associate Editor in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology. He has co-edited four books published by Springer Nature. He is a life member of the International Association of Engineers (IAENG), the National Academy of Sciences (NASI), Biotech Research Society, India (BRSI), the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE), and Nano and Molecular Society (India), and serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: November 02, 2025 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 8 assignments out of the total 12 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

Please note that assignments encompass all types (including quizzes, programming tasks, and essay submissions) available in the specific week.

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Guwahati .It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
