Business Japanese and Business Manner

By Prof. Vatsala Misra, Prof. Yumiko Furuichi   |   IIT Kanpur, University of Tokyo
Learners enrolled: 1004   |  Exam registration: 50
ABOUT THE COURSE: Variations in verbs, expressions to be used, etc. depending upon the relative social (or professional) ‘positions’ of the speaker and the listener is something unique to the Japanese language. Also, the formal and informal patterns of communication are quite different. Understanding these aspects of the language is often a challenge to a student of Japanese and make it difficult for him/her to effectively communicate in a business environment. This course has been designed in the above backdrop to explain basic concepts of Business Japanese communication and business etiquette to help foreigners work in Japanese companies or with Japanese colleagues.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:
  • University students of all backgrounds interested to learn about Japanese language and business etiquette.
  • Professionals from companies already working in Japan or with Japanese companies in India, desirous of understanding the backdrop to what they may see (or have seen)
  • Professionals planning to work with Japanese companies or do business in Japan
PREREQUISITES: There are no ‘pre-requisites’ in terms of degrees or qualification, but a basic knowledge of Japanese language (say the level of N5, in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test conducted by the Japan Foundation) is expected.

INDUSTRY SUPPORT: As mentioned above, all (Indian or foreign) companies already working in Japan or with Japanese companies desirous of understanding the backdrop to what they may see (or have seen) and those planning to work with Japanese companies or do business in Japan will benefit from the program. In the Indian context, there are several companies in the auto, and IT sector that will find value in the program, other than companies associated with specific projects, e.g. the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail
