ABOUT THE COURSE : Medical Law covers the rights, duties and legal responsibilities of healthcare professionals and establishments. The interface between Medical Law and the Legal profession is not much explored. There is a variety of legal issues connected with medical practice and the healthcare industry. The proposed 8-week course on Medical Law will comprehensively cover various aspects of this interface. Starting with Medical ethics, the course will take you through Consent, Medical Negligence, medical malpractice, Health care policy and IPR. The course will end by giving an overview of the regulatory framework governing the healthcare sector. The objective of this program is to develop sound understanding among both medical students and law students about the latest developments in this field. The course will be useful for Medical Students, Nursing Students, Law Students, Healthcare workers, Hospital Managers and Policymakers. Following a multidisciplinary approach, the course will help the learners to understand and effectively respond to the legal and regulatory issues in the healthcare sector.

Instructor bio

Prof. Narendran Thiruthy

IIT Kharagpur
Prof. Narendran Thiruthy is a faculty at Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Before joining the faculty of IIT Kharagpur, he served as the head of IPR Section in the National Biodiversity Authority, Government of India. He has represented the government in many bilateral and multilateral meetings. At IIT Kharagpur, he teaches Copyright in the Global Information Age, Music and Entertainment Law, Advanced Theories of Intellectual Property and Trademark and Designs. Narendran’s research explores the intersection of law, technology and the environment. His research areas include IP Philosophy, Protection of Cultural Property, IP procedure, IP Business models, New Technology Developments and IP, Theories of Creativity, Biodiversity Governance etc.


Prof. Chaitanya Mittal

Prof./Dr. Chaitanya Mittal is a medical faculty and medico-legal consultant in the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology at Dr. B. C. Roy Multi-Speciality Medical Research Centre BCRMMRC, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He has more than six years of teaching and research experience in his expertise. Prof. Mittal got specialized in Forensic Medicine & Toxicology from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research JIPMER, Puducherry in 2017 and further did his senior residency at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jodhpur. His research interest is in the field of Medical Jurisprudence, Forensic Pathology and Forensic Toxicology and allied fields. He has more than 22 publications in Pubmed and Scopus indexed journals and book chapters. He had received three best paper awards in his field and presented more than 15 papers in various National & Zonal conferences. He is a life member of many associations and an editorial board member & Reviewer of multiple journals.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: 27 April 2024 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 6 assignments out of the total 8 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Kharagpur .It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
