ABOUT THE COURSE:
The course on railway engineering provides complete information to the students of various aspects related to railway tracks, operation, maintenance, and control. Tracks components are discussed at the start with emphasis on Indian Railways, Track operations are discussed in the form of alignment, safe speeds of trains on the tracks, changeover between tracks and related designs. Train control systems with emphasis on safety on tracks is further discussed. Towards the end an idea on High Speed Rails is given as this is going to be the future in India also.

Week-1: Introduction, Permanent way, gauges, wheels and Axles, Locomotives and Wagons.

Week-2:  Rail section, Rail length, Tests and Failures, sleepers, sleeper density, spacing, type of sleepers, Ballast.

Week-3: Traction and Resistances, Hauling capacity and Tractive effort, Track modulus and Relief of stress.

Week-4: Track stresses – vertical, lateral, longitudinal, Stresses in Rails, Sleepers, and Ballast, Formation, Joints in Rails – Types and Requirements.

Week-5: Joints – Insulated joint, Alumino-Thermit Weld, Flash-Butt weld, Short Welded Rail, Creep in Rails, Buckling of Rails.

Week-6: Rail Failures, Rail Wears – Causes, Measurement, Types, Precautions and remedial measures, Permissible wear.

Week-7: Long Welded Rails, Continuous Welded Rails, Fastenings for Rails-to-Rail, Fastenings for Rail-to-Sleeper, Track Alignment – Need, Requirements, Selection factors.

Week-8: Speed on track – Safe, Permissible, Equilibrium, Cant excess, cant deficiency, Transition curves, Widening at curve, clearances, Gradients.

Week-9: Widening at curve, clearances, Gradients, Vertical curves; Realignment of curves; Turnouts – Types and Design, Crossings - Types and Design.

Week-10: Track Junctions and Design; Signals – Classification and functions, Types of signals, Signal placements; Interlocking of tracks – Standards, Principles, Isolation.

Week-11: Interlocking on tracks: Key, Mechanical, Route Reply, Electrical, Electronic interlocking; Train Control Systems: Block and non-block systems; Railway stations – Types, Yards, Level crossings.

Week-12: Maintenance of Tracks: Criteria, Mechanical, Measured Showal Packing, Direct Track maintenance, maintenance equipment; Drainage of Tracks – surface and subsurface, At stations, in yards, High Speed Rails – Technologies and Requirements.

Instructor bio

Prof. Rajat Rastogi

IIT Roorkee
Prof. Rajat Rastogi is a Professor in Transportation Engineering Group of Civil Engineering Department at IIT Roorkee. He has a teaching experience of 33 years. He has taught transportation related curses like Transportation Engineering-I and II, Highway Engineering, Geometric Design, Railway Engineering and Airport Planning, Transportation Planning (and Traffic Engineering). He has contributed to NPTEL course on Railway Engineering and Airport Planning which is widely referred. He has also offered a 12 weeks certificate course on Geometric Design. He possesses academic qualification as BE in Civil Engineering and ME in Highway Engineering, and PhD in Transportation Systems Engineering from IIT Bombay.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: 
26 October 2024 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 8 assignments out of the total 12 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Roorkee .It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
