The reactor design and chemical kinetics are the key elements of synthesizing almost all industrial chemicals. The types of reactor (ideal/non-ideal), choosing a catalyst, product (desired) formation rate, by-product formation, catalyst deactivation and other parameters are also important aspects for an industrial reactor operation. This course is intended to improve the basic knowledge of final-year undergraduate and graduate-level (PG) students in Chemical Engineering. The course's primary objective is to enable the students to understand the analysis of various reactors that used in chemical industry. The course will reinforce understanding of the basic concept and principles of various industrial problems associated with reaction engineering. He is teaching the course (CHE-505 Advanced Reaction Engineering, CHN-505 Chemical Reactor Analysis, CH-427 Heterogeneous Catalysis and Reactor Design) since 2015.

Week-10: Surface reaction mechanism and model studies: Langmuir-Hinshelwood reaction kinetics, Eley-Rideal reaction kinetics, LHHW model and parameter estimation, Mars-Van Krevlen model, and parameter estimation, Diffusion, and reaction: Internal effectiveness factor, Falsified-kinetics, Weisz-Prater criteria, Mear’s criteria, temperature effect
Week-11: Collection and analysis of rate law data (ODE/Non-linear regression). Heterogeneous catalysis data analysis for reactor design (Numerical method, polynomial fit, integrating method, Non-linear regression)
Week-12: Catalyst synthesis and Catalyst characterization

Prof. Taraknath Das

IIT Roorkee
Prof.Taraknath Das is an Assistant Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. He completed his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from IIT Kanpur and Post-doc at Korea Institute of Technology (KIST), South Korea. He has developed his research lab in Heterogeneous Catalysis and Spectroscopy at IIT Roorkee.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: 28 October 2023 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 8 assignments out of the total 12 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Roorkee .It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
