Experimental Physics III

By Prof. Amal Kumar Das   |   IIT Kharagpur
Learners enrolled: 764
I will teach Experimental Physics in this course. I have designed this course in three modules:
(I) Experimental Physics-I : Experiments on Mechanics, General properties of matter, Thermal properties of matter, Sound, Electricity and magnetism.
(II) Experimental Physics-II : Experiments on Optics and Quantum Physics .
(III) Experimental Physics-III : Experiments on Solid state physics and Modern Physics.

Each module is of 30 hours course. Module-I was run in Jan-Apr 2019 and module-II was run in July-Oct 2019. At present we will discuss only module-III in Jan-Apr 2020.

This course is not only suitable for undergraduate students of physics, rather it is compulsory for all undergraduate students of science, engineering and technology , who have to deal with instruments in any point of time during their career and profession. This course will make you understand the working principle of many common devices through their applications in different experiments with particular aims.
Also this course will have positive feedback for the national level examinations like GATE, NET, JAM and JEST conducted by IIT, UGC/CSIR, IIT and SERB, respectively.

INTENDED AUDIENCE : B. Sc in Physics / all science BE/BTech in all Engineering and Technology
PREREQUISITES : Nil
INDUSTRY SUPPORT : Experimental physics has the most striking impact on the industry where ever the instruments are used . The industries of electronics, telecommunication and instrumentation will specially recognize this course.

Prof. Amal Kumar Das

IIT Kharagpur
After completion of B. Sc (Hons) in Physics and M. Sc in Physics in 1994, Prof. Amal Kumar Das did Ph. D on experimental physics and material science from Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar. After completing post-doctoral research on experimental physics from Paul Drude Institute, Berlin, Germany, Prof. Das joined as a Faculty in Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in 2004 and teaching different subject to UG and PG students including experiments in teaching laboratory of all levels starting from 1st year of B. tech/ B Sc/integrated M. Sc to Ph. D. Prior to join here, Prof. Das took experimental physics laboratory for four years to B. Sc students in an undergraduate college named Malda College under North Bengal University, West Bengal.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).

Registration url: Announcements will be made when the registration form is open for registrations.
The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.
Please check the form for more details on the cities where the exams will be held, the conditions you agree to when you fill the form etc.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 8 assignments out of the total 12 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup. It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Kharagpur .It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.

Once again, thanks for your interest in our online courses and certification. Happy learning.
