Designing Learner-Centric MOOCs

By Prof. Sahana Murthy, Prof. Gargi Banerjee, Prof. Sameer Sahasrabudhe, Prof. Jayakrishnan M   |   IIT Bombay
Learners enrolled: 1547
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have become a popular avenue for diverse learners to upgrade their knowledge and skills. Instructors who are new to creating MOOCs tend to focus on the use of technology features to mimic their classroom actions. While it is necessary to be aware of the technology affordances, it is more important to focus on the pedagogy of how to use the MOOC features effectively to foster student engagement and learning. Hence MOOC instructors need a set of design principles and guidelines to create a learner-centric MOOC.

In this course, we will discuss the Learner-Centric MOOC (LCM) model, and how to apply it to create effective MOOCs.

Instructor bio

Prof. Sahana Murthy

IIT Bombay
Sahana Murthy is Professor in the Educational Technology interdisciplinary program at IIT Bombay. Her research interest is in developing students' problem-solving, design thinking and inquiry practices in STEM domains via interactive technology enhanced learning environments. Another area of focus is Teacher Use of Educational Technologies, which has led to the design of models and large-scale professional development workshops for for instructors. One such model, the learner-centric MOOC (LCM) model has formed the basis for several online and blended courses on NPTEL and IITBombayX platforms. Before joining IIT Bombay, she was a post-doctoral researcher in Physics Education Research at Rutgers University and MIT, USA. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Mumbai, Master’s degree in physics from IIT Bombay, and PhD in physics from Rutgers University.

Prof. Gargi Banerjee

Dr. Gargi Banerjee is a Research Scientist in the Interdisciplinary Programme in Educational Technology at IIT Bombay. She has completed her PhD on "A framework for enabling instructors to create effective customized learning designs with visualization" from IIT Bombay and has 12+ years of experience in conducting both face-to-face and online faculty development programs for Science and Engineering faculty. Her research Interests are:

  • Developing teachers’ learning design competency for effective integration of ICT (like simulations, augmented reality) in teaching.
  • Effect of learner-centred MOOC (LCM) pedagogy on social presence, teaching presence & cognitive presence in teacher professional development (TPD) MOOCs.
  • Developing analytical rubric to assess the quality of Learning Objects as effective learning resources.

Prof. Sameer Sahasrabudhe

Sameer S Sahasrabudhe is the Director, Educational Multimedia Research Center (EMMRC), Pune, India. Prior to this, as a Research Scientist at IITBombay, he has contributed in the development of the Learner – Centric MOOC (LCM) model at the IDP-ET; and the MOOCs platform: IITBombayX at the Dept. of CSE, IIT Bombay. He has created many learner-centric MOOCs for platforms such as: IITBombayX, edX, and SWAYAM. His course on 3D visualization and animation is subscribed by over 25000 learners across the world. It was shortlisted for the edX prize 2019.

He has a graduation in fine arts, post graduate diplomas in animation film making and distance education, and a doctorate in the area of eLearning animation.

Prof. Jayakrishnan M

Jayakrishnan M is a Senior Scientist at National Programme for Technology Enhanced Learning, IIT Madras. He completed his PhD in "A Model for Large-scale In-service Teacher Training in Effective Technology Integration in Engineering Education" from the Inter-Disciplinary Programme in Educational Technology at IIT Bombay. His research interests in the field of Educational Technology include Teacher Technology Integration, Massive Open Online Learning, Sustainability in Teacher Professional Development and Computer Supported Collaborative Learning.
