Introduction to Aircraft Design

By Prof. Rajkumar S. Pant   |   IIT Bombay
Learners enrolled: 2447
This course is designed to provide students an understanding of procedure followed in conceptual design of an aircraft, meeting the user-specified design requirements and safety considerations specified by the aircraft certification agencies.

The students will be exposed to types of aircraft and their features, requirements capture, configuration selection, initial sizing, determination of aerodynamic coefficients, constraint analysis, types of loads, V-n diagram, Range-Payload diagram, and Life Cycle Cost analysis.

A special feature of this course will be a series of tutorials which will run all along the course to give the participants a practical feel of conceptual sizing and of an existing civil transport aircraft.

Teaching Assistant
Nouman Uddin

Nouman Uddin currently working as a Project Research Assistant at Lighter-than-Air Systems Laboratory, Aerospace Engineering Department, IIT Bombay, Mumbai, India under ISRO sponsored project. He has completed his B.Tech in Aeronautical Engineering from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow in 2020, and was consistently in the top student of his class during the four years of his B.Tech. He did a one-month summer training at ADRDE, DRDO in Agra, followed by a two-month project work at IIT Bombay. Later, he was selected as a Research Intern under the "IRCC Research Internship Award 2019-20" at IIT Bombay, where he worked on the Design of a Test Rig for a Phase Change based Lighter-than-Air System. He has cleared nine NPTEL exams under the domain of Aerospace Engineering. NPTEL recognizes as NPTEL Superstar, NPTEL Enthusiast, and NPTEL Discipline Star in Aerospace Engineering for the performance in December 2020. He also has been the Teaching Assistant for the course on "Lighter-than-Air Systems" in the past semester and Teaching Assistant for the two coursesnamely “Introduction to Aerospace Engineering” and “Introduction to Aircraft Design” in the current semester at NPTEL, IIT Bombay. He is a coordinator for the Fourth National Aerospace Conceptual Design Competition (aka NACDeC-IV). He received “Special recognition” for “Academic Excellence Award” in Students- UG (National) category” presented by the Institution of Engineers, India. He presented four research papers at International Conferences, one of which received the best paper award.

Shashwat Trivedi

Shashwat Trivedi completed his Dual Degree in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Kanpur (IITK) in 2017. During that time, he did a month summer training at ADE, DRDO in Bangalore and a two month research internship at Leibniz University Hannover in Germany. He was the coordinator of the Society of Automotive Engineers IITK student chapter and contributed in developing the suspension of a Formula Student racing car. Later, he worked in a start-up incubated in IITK as a design and simulation engineer for one year and designed a novel water filtration system. He also worked in IITK on a project funded by Indian Railways studying undulations during the manufacturing of side-wallsfor railiway coaches. Currently, he is a PhD scholar at IIT Bombay working on propulsion systems for high altitude airships and application of AI and ML in aerodynamic shape optimization of airship envelope.
