There is increasing evidence to suggest that meaningful access to ICTs and capabilities required for their effective use are ensconced in myriad interactions between individuals’ skills, social positions and their larger network of social relations. Hence, when we think of an inclusive [digital] society, we need to focus on these issues as important factors shaping people’s engagement with ICTs. This course presents a brief conceptual and practical toolkit for combining the technical and social support required for achieving greater inclusion in the design of ICTs. Towards this end, we will look at three axes through which exclusion usually takes place, namely, class, disability and gender. The aim of the course is to highlight the ways in which technologies can become exclusive, how it could impact different segments of the society and how we can think of alternative design principles that will make our ICTs more inclusive.

Instructor bio

Bidisha Chaudhuri is an Assistant Professor at the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIITB).She has completed her PhD from the South Asia Institute at the Heidelberg University, Germany. Her research interest includes e-Governance, Public Policy reform, Gender and Development, South Asian politics, Information Communication Technology (ICT) for Development. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on social theories and relationship between technology and society.

Amit Prakash is an Associate Professor at the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIITB). At IIITB, he is also the Convenor of the Centre for IT and Public Policy (CITAPP, http://citapp.iiitb.ac.in/ ) and is in the core team of the E-Health Research Centre (EHRC, http://ehrc.iiitb.ac.in/ ). His research interests are in the areas of ICT and Development, e-Governance, Public Policy and Information Systems. Amit has a doctoral degree in InformationSystems from IIM Bangalore and an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from IIT Roorkee.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centers.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: 17th November 2019, Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 3 assignments out of the total 4 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100
Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75.

If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.
Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIIT Bangalore. It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.
Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies are being discontinued from July 2019 semester and will not be dispatched.
