Hasura Product Development Fellowships: some useful information

Hi all!

Here's some insight on Hasura Product Development Fellowship(HPDF)-

1. It will be a 2 month program, with certain tasks each week. This document has details on the previous version of the 8-week Fellowship - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cFREsNC5ck6hkXm1NiKn3TsIVV9K2yEkiV1NsmYZuac/edit?usp=sharing
Please note that this document is just for reference, please don't ask for edit access or get confused as to how to do this. YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING THAT'S MENTIONED IN THE ABOVE DOCUMENT!

2. The students who are among the top scorers will be considered for the internship. The score to be considered will be the final score that will comprise of 75% of exam score and 25% of the assignment score.

3. The chosen students will create an app of their choice and work with us in making the app fully functional as initially thought, and at the same time look really professional.

4. The app could be a mobile app or web app, as chosen by the intern.

5. The app can be made in the language the intern chooses.
Since you are a programmer, or are to become one, please note that "language" here means some language the computer understands, and not the language we speak or write, i.e English, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, etc, so please do not ask questions like if you could use English as the language, NO.

6. We'll be using Slack for all communication, and it'll be totally different from Discourse, so that would take a while to get used to, please don't worry about that, as a programmer, you're supposed to switch environments with ease and be comfortable with the change, and adapt quickly. It might be difficult, but not impossible. :)

7. You'll be having enough basic knowledge from IMAD, so make sure after you're done with the exams, you go through the practicals and try to understand how stuff works, mainly APIs.

8. A certificate will be awarded to the intern who is diligent, communicates well, is honest, and completes all the tasks, and has completed the app development.

9. The app will be the intern's to keep and use even further, we'll support your idea if it needs to be supported.

10. The best interns might get a further internship opportunity with our partners, or even a job opportunity.

VERY IMPORTANT-
  • You don't have to necessarily do the practicals before the exams or before finishing any assignment, so please don't get confused. You can SKIP DOING THE PRACTICALS.
  • Make sure you watch all the videos, don't delay the main course modules because of the practical modules, as the practical modules will not be covered in any of the final exam. However, it is advised to carefully watch all the videos and understand how stuff works. You may test it out yourself once you're finished with the theory.
  • It is important to watch all the videos. DO NOT SKIP WATCHING THE PRACTICAL VIDEOS.
  • NPTEL EXAM is on 24th September, 2017, will be held at an exam center, details of which will be in the HALL TICKET.
  • HALL TICKET will be available soon, there will be an announcement when it's available, so check your email regularly, stay in touch with Discourse, and keep checking the announcements on the course page in a day or two so that you don't miss out any important notice.
  • Please read the Announcements carefully. It is MANDATORY to fully read the announcement so that you don't miss any information related to the course.
  • HASURA EXAM will be held on 30th September, 2017. It is ONLINE, there WON'T be any center. It can be taken from HOME, OFFICE, COLLEGE, CAFE, etc.
  • NPTEL EXAM is more valuable than HASURA EXAM, so DON'T miss the NPTEL EXAM.
  • HASURA EXAM is NOT A SUBSTITUTION for NPTEL EXAM.
  • HASURA EXAM is mainly for those who cannot appear for the NPTEL EXAM for whatever reason.
  • If you are giving the NPTEL EXAM, you can still give the HASURA EXAM (if you want).
  • Internship opportunities will be given to people who give any of the two exams.
  • NPTEL EXAM date CANNOT be changed. IT IS ONLY ON 24th September, 2017!
  • That's all for now.
P.S. -  Please fill up this google form so that we can get in touch with your college authorities for future events in your college.

Regards,
IMAD Team

Top students from IMAD can become Hasura Product Development Fellows!

Hi,

We hope you are enjoying the learning experience in IMAD. We are close to the end of the course, with the Week 6 content being released last week. Assignment 4, 5 and 6 are active right now and we encourage you to take these quizzes before the deadline.

We would like to share some more information about the Hasura Product Development fellowships available after the course. This will be an 8-week remote internship (from your home) for the top IMAD students. We expect to begin the internship towards the end of October. The purpose of the internship is purely educational, you will be asked to build a complete web/mobile app during these 8 weeks. We will provide guidance and support, conduct training sessions for all interns and help you learn app development by actually building your first product.

Some of the highlights of the internships are mentioned below -

  • A real-time discussion forum so that you can contact Hasura team with your doubts.
  • Lectures on product development from industry experts to help you learn. (this time we had Mr. Alexis Piperides, CEO of Proto.io speaking to our fellows)
  • The best apps developed during the internship will be featured on our social media and blogs
  • A certificate of Internship with Hasura, on successful completion of the fellowship
  • Possible opportunities to intern with other companies for successful students (we will share your profiles with any partners if they are looking for developers)
Here is another success story from the Hasura Product Development fellowship: Aja Sharma was one of our fellows from the January IMAD course. Take a look at his blog here and the youtube video about his app.

In order to be eligible for the fellowship, you need to finish the IMAD course. You should take the final exam and finish four or more assignments. (registration for final exam is open here) At the end of the course, we will create a merit list of the student with the final scores and the top 5% of students will be selected for the fellowship. Students who have taken the NPTEL final exam will also be eligible for the fellowship. (the NPTEL and Hasura course completion exam are identical)

We hope that you are able to finish the course and join us as Hasura fellows soon.

Regards,
IMAD Team

What are Hasura Study Groups and how you can be a part of them?

Hi,

The registrations for the Hasura course completion exam are open. You can register by filling up this form

In case you are facing any difficulties with the course and need some help, we recommend that you join the IMAD community on Discourse or join one of the offline Study Groups near you, so that you can resolve your doubts quickly and complete the course.

Offline study groups are available through the Hasura Ed app (download it here). The purpose of the study groups is to encourage IMAD students to meet and discuss course-related topics every weekend.

During the meetings, participants will be able to -
  • Discuss weekly IMAD lectures
  • Resolve each other's doubts and help your fellow students
  • We will also share an interesting question every week that all group members can solve during the meeting.
Each group will have up to 25 members. If you cannot find a group near you, please do volunteer to create your own study group and we will get back to you soon. Please use this opportunity to meet fellow students in the city, and learn in a collaborative manner. We have two special study groups for this Saturday. One of them will be in IITM Research Park, Chennai at Prof. Gaurav Raina's office, while the other one is at Hasura's Bangalore office. We are looking forward to seeing some of you attend the meetings. Download the app, check out the groups near you and attend the study group meetings so that you can learn together.

P.S. In case you have joined a group in your neighbourhood and cannot attend the meeting, please exit the group so that other people can attend in your place. There are only limited spots open for each group (25) and we encourage all of you to attend group meetings or volunteer to start your own study group.

IMAD Success Story: Amay Mishra and Debargha Bhattacharjee, IMAD students and then Hasura Product Development Fellows, worked together to build the TrackR app. Read about their
journey here and watch this YouTube video where they discuss their app. You can be a part of the Hasura Product Development Fellowship as well by finishing the course and clearing the final exam.

Hope this will inspire you continue your IMAD journey and learn even more.
It might seem to be difficult at first, but it's not, you just have to start it, you may not succeed at first, but you'll be able to do it if you don't just give up easily.
Please have a look at these Android apps made by Hasura interns(yeah that's right!) -

All the above apps are made by IMAD students, who didn't give up. :)
You can get the opportunity too! Just need to complete atleast 4 assignments, and give the final exam. if you score well, we'll be taking you in for an internship after the course. :D

Need more inspiration? Have a look at these blogposts by some of the interns-
These guys are no different than you, they chose to keep working, learning, exploring and having fun! And now they have their own app. :D

It's just your willpower, if you think you can, you actually can. :)
We hope to seeing all of you till the end of the course! It's going to be fun, keep watching the videos, slides, do the assignments, finish the practicals, have fun, and enjoy!

In order to improve the learning experience for all students, we are super excited to announce the launch of the Hasura Ed app which can be downloaded at this link - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.hasura.hasuraed The app can be downloaded for Android devices. The Hasura Ed app has several useful features:

  • Find offline IMAD study groups near you: Every IMAD student can join a study group in your locality or city/town and take part in discussions with fellow students. If you don't have a study group around, you can volunteer and create your own IMAD study group.

We hope that all of you will take this opportunity to meet with peers and developers in your city who are also taking the course and work together, solve each other's doubts and learn.
  • Course Notifications: All course related notifications will be available on the app. You will know if there is new content that has been released or if an assignment deadline is due. If you have the app, you are not likely to miss any IMAD-specific updates.

Learn how to secure your app against attacks in IMAD week 4!

Hi all,

Week 4 content has been released on the NPTEL website and youtube. Assignment 4 is also available now. The deadline for submission is Aug 31.

After a couple of weeks of heavy content, Week 4 is going to be a change of pace for the course before we move on to mobile app development. This week, we have just 3 video lectures and one of them is a practical module. We will be covering the following ideas during the lectures:
  • Authentication with HTTP
  • Security best practices for your web-app
  • The practical module will cover implementing a password storage system, a login system and sessions for your app
By the end of this week's lectures, you will understand how to make HTTP requests, how we use cookies and tokens and how to store passwords securely in the database. We will also look at security for our web-apps and understand how insecure apps can be attacked in a variety of ways: man-in-the-middle attack, SQL injection, through open APIs and more. Aspiring hackers should love this week's lectures!

It will only take you 70 minutes to finish the week's content! So make sure you don't miss these lectures.

Some other announcements:
  • Assignment 1 deadline submission date has passed. More than 16,000 students have submitted their assignments. In case you weren't able to finish Assignment 1, do not lose hope, you can still submit 4 other assignments during the course and be eligible for the final certificate. We will be using the best 4 assignment marks to evaluate your course score. So there's still a lot of time to catch up. Good luck!
  • Assignment 2 and 3 deadlines are approaching. Please make sure you go through the videos and submit the assignments before August 23.
  • Some people have been unsure of how to access the weekly content and assignments. Here's how you do it:
    • Go to this link: https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc17_cs40/course
    • Login to the NPTEL website using the same email id that you used for registering to the course.

What do you need to do to succeed in IMAD?

Dear all,

We hope that all of you are busy watching the IMAD lectures. Content for the first three weeks has been released so far and the assignments for all three weeks are open. Week 2 content is very heavy on practicals. These practical modules will solidify your theoretical understanding and help you see what the internals of a web-app actually are and how they are built! The content covers a lot of concepts, and for non-programmers or non-software engineers things might get difficult. However, doing these practical exercises yourself is not vital to complete this course.

Even if you watch the instructors coding live through the video, you will get a very real feel for how things work. Watch the practical videos this week and when we return to lighter theoretical modules next week with easy non-coding practical exercises you will feel comfortable again.

For programmers who are just beginners, or new to nodejs, git etc, please don't be worried if you can't keep up with the speed and do all the things done on the practicals within a few days. The reason the practicals are not mandatory to the completion of the course is that it takes a lot of time to get familiar in a hands-on way and you should just use these practical modules as a starting point to begin your journey.

Once again, to be able to complete this course, and get an end-to-end understanding of modern apps doing these practicals yourself in a few days is not important. Understanding these practicals is important though! Watch the videos, complete the assignments and you will emerge from this course far more knowledgable than when you started.

Some other important announcements:
  • We are conducting a Live Facebook webinar with Mr. Anuj Rathi, (VP-Products @ Swiggy) for all IMAD students. Mr. Anuj Rathi will talk about his experiences and how the popular Swiggy app was built. All of you are invited to attend the session.
  • We are also conducting an "Ask Madi Anything" session tomorrow to go over the week 1 IMAD content. This will be a Livestream and Q&A session where we will answer any queries that you may have for the first week's content. Please make sure that you attend the event tomorrow in case you are facing any difficulties in the course. Please like and follow the Hasura Education page to get instant updates.
The assignment submission deadlines are August 13, August 16 and August 23 (assignments 1, 2 and 3 respectively).
We look forward to seeing a lot of you attending today and tomorrow's sessions. We will conduct similar doubt-resolution sessions for Week 2 and Week 3 content as well in the future.

Happy Learning,

Assignment 1 deadline extended, a live webinar for all students, and other important news!

Hi all,

The deadline for Assignment 1 has been extended to Sunday night (13th August). We understand if you have not had the time to watch the first week’s content so far. However, it does not take a long time for you to watch the lectures and finish the assignment. Actually, the entire Week's content (all 5 course videos) will take only 57 minutes!

After you finish watching the first week’s videos, you will have learnt -

  • Important terminology: What is a web app?
  • Basic understanding of the Internet, how networks and protocols work?
  • How to build your own web server?
  • You will also have built your profile app.

All this in less time than it takes to watch a movie! We strongly recommend that you take out an hour and go through the Week 1 content as soon as you can.

Live Webinar for all IMAD students tomorrow:

  • We are organising a webinar for all IMAD students tomorrow at 7:30 pm. We have Mr. Anuj Rathi, VP - Products @ Swiggy (the popular food delivery app) who will talk to all students about app development and his journey at Swiggy.

  • This webinar will be on the Hasura Education Facebook channel. Make sure that you follow us on Facebook, so that you get notified when the webinar is live. We will have a Q&A session where you can ask your questions and get them answered. All of you are invited.

We look forward to seeing all of you in the Facebook webinar tomorrow. We hope you schedule time for the IMAD content and finish your assignment before the deadline. Please reach out to us on discourse in case you have any questions. Happy Learning!

We're LIVE!

Hi all,

We're extremely sorry for the slow profile page uploads today.

Here's a breakdown of what happened:
1) Each student deploying their profile sites gets one server hosted on their own custom domain
2) Yesterday we scaled up to a 440 core, 500 GB RAM cluster to handle load
3) However, unexpectedly traffic doubled(!) by today evening and the internal database and systems to create new servers for new students joining, started creating problems. We started running out of internal IPs on the cluster!

We've now created multiple clusters to host everyone's servers so some of you will see
user.imad.hasura-app.io domains and some of you will see user.imad-b.hasura-app.io domains.

You might not understand what the above means, but by the end of this course, you will be able to understand exactly what happened and how we solved it!

We're now confident of reacting to any amount of load with these systems optimally and so now you can go ahead and maintain your profile pages easily.

Once again, sorry for the inconvenience that some of you might have faced.

For those of you who have not yet created your profile pages, please watch the first introduction video (it's only 8mins) and create your first simple webapp (your profile site) within minutes.

Remember to share your profile site with us on discourse and feel free to share it with your friends on social media :)

Happy building!

Regards,
IMAD Team

Urgent: Issues while running your profile app

Hi all,

You might be experiencing some issues while running your profile app.
We have had absolutely unprecedented load even while operating a 300 node cluster. We are scaling up as quickly as possible. Please bear with us for another hour or so and all your services will be up. This is happening because of the huge numbers that we are seeing for the course. When we discuss scaling your apps in one of the future videos, we will go into details of why we are facing these issues.
Please bear with us for the next hour or so while we resolve the issue.

Regards,
IMAD Team

Regarding questions and discussion:

Please only use the discourse link given above for all discussion. As the interface is easier to manage, we prefer discourse as the forum, and the IMAD team will come in and answer questions on this forum. Unfortunately the discourse software cannot handle too much load and you might find that sometimes the site doesn't work as there are too many users trying to access it at the same time. This might be a problem only during the first few days. If you aren't able to access discourse, please do check back in a few minutes, but do make sure you ask your questions and have them answered!

Before you ask a question, please check if anyone else has asked a similar question, and if so, vote up that question (by clicking on "Like"). This way our team can answer the most pressing questions first. You can tag Admin or Moderators to your question if you need some help. This is the list of moderators for the course - https://discourse.imad.hasura.io/about

Community Guidelines:
IMAD is a fun community of developers and we encourage healthy discussion in our forums. In order to maintain the right atmosphere in the groups, here are some guidelines that you should go through -
  • Be polite in all our interactions with others. We do not tolerate any negative comments, name-calling or disrespectful remarks about a fellow student or anyone you interact with on the group. If someone says something inappropriate, he/she will be flagged and will be given a warning. Repeat offenders will be disqualified from the course.
  • Please be patient when you are asking questions. Not everyone is available at all times and because the community is huge, you might not get an immediate response. Your queries will be answered however, so don't lose hope.
  • If someone has helped you out with an issue, say "Thank you" and acknowledge that person's effort. If a fellow student is facing an issue which you are familiar with, please go ahead and help each other. We need your active participation to ensure that no one is left behind.
  • Please do not create unnecessary threads and spam the forum. Check out this post with more detailed guidelines on how to use the forum: https://discourse.imad.hasura.io/t/important-information/9969
Participate in as many discussions, answer queries from your fellow course mates, create discussion topics, learn and contribute!
Enjoy the course!

Regards,
IMAD Team

Only one day to go for IMAD!

Hi all,

We hope all of you are excited about the course. IMAD begins tomorrow.
We have received some queries about how the course will run and here are some clarifications:

  • The course is completely online and there is no specific timing for the course. Course videos will be released every week along with an assignment. You can watch the videos anytime and finish the assignments before the scheduled deadline.
  • If students have queries about the content, the only place to resolve doubts is the Discussion forum. We will have Hasura engineers who will help students with their issues. We encourage all of you to participate in the discussion forums and help each other learn.
  • We will cover both web and mobile application development during the course. People with little or no programming experience can also take the course and learn application development. These are some prerequisite courses that you can go over:  Introduction to Javascript
If you have any more queries, you can reach out to us on the Discourse forum.

We look forward to interacting with all of you during the course. If you know any of your friends, college classmates or colleagues who might be interested in the course, please ask them to register soon as the registrations will close tomorrow. (You can share this post) The course registrations will end at 5 pm tomorrow. (July 24)

Regards,
IMAD Team

Discussion Forum for the course

Hi all,

IMAD will begin in just 4 days! Do share the information about the course with your friends/classmates, colleagues or family, so that they can also register and learn app development. The registrations will close on July 24.

We will be using this Discourse forum for all course-related discussions and query-resolution. We will not be using any other discussion forum or google group. Please go ahead and introduce yourself to your fellow students.

Please fill out this google form and help us reach more students with the course.

11 days to go for IMAD! Are you ready?

Hi all,

We only have a few days to go before the course begins. This is a reminder email for all students so that you can get started with the course prerequisites and be prepared when the course begins on July 24.

You should go through these pre-requisite courses:

This will help you gain more out of the course lectures. We have also released 3 course videos from Week 1 of IMAD for interested students to get started. All the course videos from the previous iteration of the course (January) are also available on the Youtube channel

The last date for course registrations is July 24. If you know anyone in your college or at your work who might benefit from the course, please do share this course information with them and ask them to join. If you have a minute, please answer these three questions. A larger and stronger IMAD community will enhance the learning experience for all the students in the course.

Regards,
IMAD Team

Welcome to IMAD!

Dear Students,

Welcome to IMAD 2017. We're happy to have you with us. Please note that some of the week 1 content (about building a web app) is now live on the portal, including a practical. Please start watching the videos. This content has been released early in order to give all of you a sneak-peek into the course and help you get started quickly.

  • You are advised to go through the videos one by one, take your time to understand what the teacher is trying to say. (It'll be very easy though).
  • It may take a while for you to understand the NPTEL dashboard, it's totally okay, take your time. You can do it! :)
We wish you all the very best as you start this exciting journey of knowledge.
Happy Learning!
