About the course
With the growing need for electronics in day-to-day life, there is a necessity to address the Security concerns that it implies. Keeping this in view, the Information Security Education and Awareness (ISEA) program was launched by the Government of India through the Ministry of Information Technology. IIT Madras is an active member of this program. Having understood the needs, IIT M has offered two MOOCs under the Information Security series in 2015 and 2016. These two courses are available to public for free viewing. The current course is the third in the series and will cover Server and Network administration for Information security engineers. Understanding these basic concepts is a must for an engineer to appreciate advanced concepts related to Information security.

Course instructor


Prof.V. Kamakoti is Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He specializes in the areas of Computer Architecture and Secure Systems Engineering. He is a coordinator of the Information Security Education and Awareness program of the Department of Information Technology, Government of India


Prof.Shankar Raman completed his BE (Computer Science and Engineering) from Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, University of Madras. He obtained his M Sc (Engineering) from Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, and Ph. D. from Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He has about 2 and half decades of Industrial experience working for Companies such as Wipro Infotech R&D, HCL HP R&D, and HCL Cisco Offshore Development Centre. Shankar Raman has successfully created two startup companies: one in the area of consulting, and the other in the area of Network Storage product development. He is currently with RISE Lab in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Madras. He has published about 20 research papers in the areas of VLSI Design, Computer Architecture, Networking, Software Testing, Internet Power Consumption, and holds a well cited patent in the area of Network Security.


Prof. Vasan holds an undergraduate and masters degree from BITS Pilani and have been working in the IT Industry for close to 25 years now. Vasan has been working with different leading IT companies in many capacities both in India and abroad in the areas of network management, network appliance development and security domains. He has been working close to 7 years with Cisco Systems and have been part of the engineering of different Cisco products.  He has also been involved with engineering a network storage appliance product for a start up company. Currently, Vasan is acting as a senior technical consultant for different organizations and institutions like Secure engineering group in the Computer Science department of IIT (Chennai) in designing and developing indigenous technology solutions in the areas of network and security under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. As part of professional career, Vasan has also been associated in delivering training programs in the areas of Operating System, Computer Networks, Programming Languages, Network Security and Storage Networking to top IT service companies in India as well as premier educational universities.

Weeks 1 and 2
Introduction to Operating Systems fundamentals - Process, Memory, File System management.

Weeks 3 and 4
Introduction to Linux,  Basic commands and file handling commands, Standard I/O, pipes and standard error related commands, Task Control commands, Basics of System administration

Weeks 5 and 6
UNIX Basic scripting, Setting environment variables and using them in command line, Basic looping syntaxes in shell script, Continuation of looping syntaxes in shell script, practicing sample shell scripts

Weeks 7 and 8
Networking Basics, Networking Terminologies, Structure of Internet and packet delays: Introduction, Network devices, Network Administration in Linux

Certificate
Final score will be calculated as:25% of assignment score + 75% of Final Exam score
25% assignment score is calculated as 25% of average of Best 6 out of 8 Assignments.
E-Certificate will be given to those who register and write the exam and score greater than or equal to 40% final score.
Certificate will have your name,photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of NPTEL and IIT Madras.
It will be e-verifiable at nptel.ac.in/noc.
